The Future of German Security and Defense - CSIS-KAS Series: Germany at the End of the Merkel Era
Please join CSIS and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung for a conversation on Germany’s current and future security and defense policy and its defense spending priorities ahead of Germany’s elections this September. What is Chancellor Merkel’s legacy on German security and defense policy, and what, if any, change will occur following the September elections? Looking toward the future, what impact will Germany have on NATO’s updated Strategic Concept and what lessons has it drawn from its recent withdraw from Afghanistan for its current and future military missions? How does Germany view the security needs of the Indo-Pacific region? Would Germany consider increasing its military presence in Africa or NATO’s Eastern flank or would domestic restraints prohibit it? Prof. Dr. Joachim Krause, Director of the Institute for Security Policy at Kiel University, and Kori Schake, Senior Fellow and Director of Security and Defense Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, will join Rachel Ellehuus, CSIS Senior Fellow and Deputy Director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program, for an in-depth discussion on this topic. Paul Linnarz, Director of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung’s USA Office, will offer introductory remarks.
