Sharpening America's Innovative Edge
Since World War II, the United States has led the world in developing cutting-edge knowledge and technology. A dynamic private sector, a skilled workforce, leading universities, and federal support for research and development (R&D), reinforced by an open trade and investment environment, kept America at the innovation frontier for decades. But U.S. policymakers have grown complacent, resting on the success of the Cold War model without maintaining or modernizing it. The CSIS Trade Commission on Affirming American Leadership will release its report on how to sharpen the U.S. innovative edge in the next decade. The commission recommends seven elements of a national technology strategy, organized in three lines of effort: investing in innovation; protecting critical technologies; and championing data governance. If adopted, these recommendations would sharpen the U.S. innovative edge and position the country for long-term leadership.
